Back in 1971, Coming From Reality was Rodriguez’s last gasp, the follow-up to Cold Fact and the final album he was allowed to record for the Sussex label. Unearthed, once again, by Light In The Attic Records, it’s another treat for fans new and old, designed – at the time – as Rodriguez’s vision of a perfect pop album.
Coming From Reality found Rodriguez decamping from Detroit to London’s Lansdowne Studios, where the album was recorded with some of the UK’s top talent including Chris Spedding (Sex Pistols, Dusty Springfield, Harry Nilsson) and producer Steve Rowland (The Pretty Things, PJ Proby and the man who discovered The Cure), who recalls Coming From Reality as his favourite ever recording project.

Forget about Johannes Kerkorrel and his buddies, KOOS were the truly innovative band whose music defined and reflected South Africa’s increasingly dark eighties. The band was formed in 1986 by conceptual artist Neil Goedhals and actor Marcel Van Heerden, who were joined by Gys de Villiers, Megan Kruskal, Velile Nxazonke and Kendell Geers. The country’s original punk poet Johan van Wyk wrote some of the lyrics.

Sticky Antlers were always bound to stick out like a bleeding corpse at a gospel tent revival and they definitely do not give you more of the same. Emerging from the dismal grayness of Pretoria with a “haunting, sometimes hysterical sound” (Fred de Vries review in Weekender Dec 13-14 2008), the music is fuelled by human ignorance, feverish nightmares, auditory hallucinations, befriending insects, ecstatic love, apocalyptic visions and daytime TV gibberish. Although the group uses a very traditional setup of drums, bass and guitars they still manage to elude easy definition, one can only describe the diverse and intense sounds as energetic, tense, noisy, beautiful, spontaneous, and unpredictable. Incorporating tribal chants, sonic freak-outs and motorik beats driven into a frenzied almost trance-like state, Sticky Antlers offers the audience something altogether different and much more unusual.
